5 Big Botox Myths

Botox is a word we hear everywhere—on TV, radio, and even through our closest friends and family members. Some people get it done on a regular basis while others aren’t quite ready to dive in. Used for over 10 years, Botox is a popular treatment for people who want to improve the look and appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet and help reveal a more youthful appearance.

We’ve heard a lot of great things about Botox and with those great things, also a lot of misinformation. Usually, the ones choosing to wait are skeptical due to common myths associated with Botox or are skeptical of the results the treatment offers. We’re here to help you learn more about Botox and put some of those myths to rest.

What is Botox?

Botox is one of the most popular and common cosmetic treatments for many reasons. For most, it is used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing the underlyingmuscles. Medical providers have used it for many years to improve the cosmetic appearance of their clients. Advantages of using Botox include a more youthful appearance without the need of surgery or time lost for recovery. Most people who use Botox can resume their regular activities right after their injections.

Botox is a protein derived from Botulinum toxin and a neuromodulators derived from Clostridium Botulinum. Clostridium Botulinum is an organism found in the natural environment. It’s largely inactive and also non-toxic.

Over the years, Botox has been used not just for cosmetic reasons but also to help with severe underarm sweating, blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking or twitching), strabismus (misaligned eyes), chronic migraines, and even an overactive bladder.

Myth #1: It’s Toxic

Botox comes from its active ingredient, botulinum toxin, however, toxins in Botox are in such small amounts that it’s safe to use and will not spread to areas outside of the treatment area. In fact, Botox was first approved in 1989 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat certain medical conditions, since then it has been approved for cosmetic uses and is safe and effective.

Myth #2: Botox Causes Undue Stress On My Muscles

Wrinkles and fine lines come with both age and the inability of our muscles to relax, including time when we aren’t even aware of it, such as during our sleep. As our muscles tense, it causes lines to appear over time. Botox helps by actually relaxing the muscles temporarily to help reduce the amount of stress on our skin and helps to reduce wrinkles and fine lines by smoothing the skin. Botox is actually doing the opposite by reducing stress not adding more to it.

Myth #3: It’s Addictive

Botox itself is not addictive on a physiological level. Clients tend to come back since Botox is only a temporary solution and only lasts for so long. In order to keep the results, you do need to return for treatment usually every 2 to 3 months. With such great results from Botox, of course people keep coming back and some might call the results addictive. Keep in mind that you can stop treatment whenever you so choose.

Myth #4: It’s Not Needed Until Lines Appear

Wrinkles and lines appear over time. While you may not be able to see fine lines immediately, they’re there under the surface. If you’re able to get ahead of the game, it may help in the long run. Traditionally, people don’t even consider getting Botox until they see wrinkles and then turn to it to turn back the clock, however, more so now, clients are using Botox for preventative treatments.

Myth #5: Botox Is Something Only Women Get

Wanting to look and feel young doesn’t come with one gender. In fact, more and more men are getting Botox treatments and even receiving them as gifts. Men care about their appearance just like women and a lot of men in the 30’s are starting their preventative treatment. Whether they’re getting Botox to soften their look or to attract a partner, Botox is something that’s being done by anyone and everyone. Don’t assume if you’re a man that this treatment isn’t for you. It might just be your best wingman.
